John DeMers stumbled on a small-scale fringe theater festival during a visit to Montreal in the dead of winter, crunching through ice and snow to reach performances. He loved the idea and, most of all, the feeling of fringe so much that history’s original festival had to be next – Edinburgh. That summertime encounter in Scotland changed (and/or expanded) the direction of his life, from that of an author, broadcaster and teacher to that of a true fringe aficionado.
John has spent a long career covering every form of news, for UPI and three daily newspapers, plus finding a place on radio and television for 26 years. He has published 60 books, both fiction and nonfiction, and prides himself on being able to tell the difference. Recently, John has penned the first in a series of crime novels to be set at fringe festivals around the world. Beginning with Edinburgh, of course. Based in northern Virginia outside Washington, D.C., he is the editor and publisher of what you’re reading right now.
